Grandma on the subject of 'rendition'

THANK you for printing Salman Rushdie's "The outsourcing of evil" (Opinion, 10/1).

Until this century's use of "rendition" I associated it with rendering meat. Now every time a politician uses the word I am vividly reminded of what happens to that meat. You dice the fat and heat it slowly in a heavy pan with a little water. You can speed up the process by pressing it flat with a potato masher. When the fat is liquid, you can strain it from the browned connective tissue, which becomes "crackling". Both crackling and pure fat you then store in the fridge for later use. All that from that most American of cook books, The Joy of Cooking.

American propagandists would have done better by getting advice from their rendering grandmothers. The grandchildren clearly don't go near the heat of the kitchen. Meanwhile, we bystanders watch their machinations too sickened by them to eat.
